MISCARRIAGE | PREGNANCY | TRYING TO CONCEIVE

What Is A Rainbow Baby & What Is Rainbow Baby Day?

Before I experienced a miscarriage, I had no idea what a “Rainbow Baby” was. However, after experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss, the term took on an important meaning in our family.

A “Rainbow Baby” is a baby that is born after a miscarriage, stillbirth or after the loss of an infant. Many people refer to them as the babies that are born after the “storm.”

Conversely, a “Sunshine Baby” is a baby that is born before a loss.

What Is National Rainbow Baby Day & When Is It?

National Rainbow Baby Day is a special day designed to honor Rainbow Babies and takes place on August 22 every year.

What Are Some Ways To Celebrate Rainbow Baby Day?

Although there aren’t traditional ways of celebrating “Rainbow Baby Day” like there are for other holidays, I’ve come up with a few ideas for celebrating your special baby:

  • Talk about your experience of loss and your journey to have your “Rainbow Baby” on social media. You never know who might be suffering their infertility or miscarriage behind closed doors. Speaking about your experience lets others know they’re not alone and what better way to honor your “Rainbow” babe than to give others hope?
  • Bake a cake or make cupcakes with rainbow layers! I’m all about any reason to have cake and making a rainbow cake sounds pretty fantastic to me!
  • Go outside and make chalk rainbows on the sidewalk with your little one! Awhile back, after we finally welcomed our “Rainbow Baby,” I was walking in the park with him when I came across a beautiful chalk rainbow that another child had drawn, and it brightened my day. Maybe you could brighten up someone else’s day with your own chalk art!
  • Color, paint or otherwise create your own rainbow art! If the weather is bad and doing a chalk rainbow on the sidewalk doesn’t make sense, get creative and look up rainbow crafts on Pinterest!
  • Buy your “Rainbow Baby” a special present! We’ve listed a bunch of “Rainbow Baby” gift ideas below that would be great gifts!
